The Qualen International XI Cricket Team made the headlines in the Eastern District Chronicle newspaper in York on 18th March 1899 after securing an historic win over the Beverley Cricket Team in a closely contested match played at Gilgering the previous week. Their 14 run victory established its place in local cricketing folklore with grandfather George Charles Duperouzel top scoring for Qualen with 19 runs in the first innings when the team had only 9 batsmen and contributing 6 runs in the second innings. Did your ancestor play in this match? This wonderful photo of the Qualen Cricket Team shows grandfather George Duperouzel in a seated position on the far left. Let me know if you believe the players in this photo were those who played in this famous cricket match in 1899. ‘How’s that?’
