3 May 1876: Commemorating the 145th anniversary of the birth of Grand-Aunt Julia Maud Ovens, the daughter of our Irish GGM Julia Neagle and our French GGF Aimable Ciril Dupérouzel.
Julia Maud, affectionately known as ‘Maudie’, married William Ovens, ‘Barney’, at St. Peter’s Church, Gilgering in 1904. Maudie was much loved by all the family and very resourceful having raised 11 children all of whom reached adulthood on their farm at Castle Rock, York.
According to Olive Munckton, her mother Maudie was immensely proud of her French ancestry. Had she known about her father’s convict past she was able to keep this fact a secret and maintain the honour of the family. Maudie and Barney later lived at the Duperouzel cottage at 46, South Street, York.
Maudie had an excellent memory right up until the end of her life. She passed away aged 94 years in 1970. Not forgotten.

I highly recommend the book, ‘Four Julias: One Hundred Years in York’ written by my cousin Susan Ovens Groom. ISBN 0.646.14838.9
